Interesting things at the event——Was it your first time to attend this volunteer activity? Where did the youth representative that you are in charge of come from? Was there any interesting things during the forum you’d like to share? (For example, some interesting things caused by cultural differences when communicating with foreign guests)

I was very honored to participate in this volunteer event. I was responsible for accompanying Sue and Jacob from the city of Austin, USA. We were in the same car with the city representatives from Tel Aviv, Israel and York, England. We often shared snacks and chat in the car. Once, several of our volunteers from Hunan university sang the school songs . After listening to the songs, some city representatives also wanted to sing. So they sang the children's songs of their countries, and we started a small concert in the car. During these five days we spent together, I felt that we exchanged ideas like friends beyond national borders and races.

We went to Taiping Street with representatives from Austin and Tel Aviv before they leaving. The representative from York felt unacceptable about dishes like frogs and was not used to chopsticks. This showed the difference among cultures. However, although they are not very used to the chinese custom, they always showed respect and understanding. I was very touched by their attitude. We should always stay humble and respectful when facing multiculture.

I was responsible for accompanying Mr. Mariela Oliveira, Representative and Director of UNESCO Beijing Office. She had participated the same forum last year, so she was very familiar with Changsha. I still remember that when she was in the car, she said to our leader: “Hey, I'm going to have some snacks tonight, crayfish and some drink. In the evening, she went to experience the food and night scenes of Changsha. After getting up the next day, she said that she had a good time last night and slept very well. She had missed Changsha a lot and she was so happy to come back.

The most interesting thing was that I served as a media translator and assisted some media staffs to interview the youth representatives and city representatives who participated in the youth representative seminar. Through these interviews, I met many interesting people and heard their opinions. For example, in the high-level forum, a reporter asked me to interview a Japanese representative, Yasuda. I started with translating the reporter's questions directly. Later, after I got used to the interview mode, I tried to ask some profound questions following her answers. I asked: As a youth (representative), what had you done to promote cultural exchanges and the development of media art? She told me that she was a legal counsel in a company, but she joined an NGO because of her love of cultural exchanges, her job in the NGO was selecting representatives to participate in cultural exchange projects abroad. Therefore, she promoted cultural exchanges by participating in this kind of activities, brought excellent culture to her hometown and promoted Japanese culture to the world. The result of this interview was very satisfying. Afterwards, I talked with Yasuda for a while. She said that Chinese friends are very kind and enthusiastic. After the discussion in the forum, she also got a lot of profound understandings. I was really happy that I can participate in this awesome event and that our efforts had been confirmed.

It was not my first time to participate in this forum. This time, I accompanied two young representatives from Latvia. Their ethnic costumes were very beautiful. So when we were walking on the street, many citizens in Changsha would ask if they could take a photo with them. They thought they were very popular and they felt very happy about it.

I participated in this forum for the first time. The foreign guest I accompanied was from Myanmar. There were a lot of interesting things about him. One dish at the welcome dinner was fish head, but many foreign guests didn't eat fish head, becasue the fish they bought at their countries were fish with the head already cut down. So they might thought that the fish head was horrible, and the fish eyes seemed to be staring at themselves, so they would not eat.

There was another interesting thing about the foreign guest I accompanied. One day, he suddenly asked me on WeChat if I had a nail clipper and he needed one. He asked me if he could use my nail clipper and he wanted to buy it as souvenir. I said that I should send him a souvenir, so I sent him my nail clipper. I think this was a very cute thing. There are still many differences in gift-giving culture between Chinese and foreign countries.
