What is UNEP’s ambition?

“UNEP has the responsibility to integrate environmental and sustainability norms and goals into the global digital economy.” According to the UNEP Medium Term Strategy 2022 - 2025.

Learn more about three strategic actions that guide UNEP’s process of transformation and explore some pilots and early successes.

How UNEP will achieve its goals?

A range of data and digital technologies are sweeping the planet with the potential to unleash major structural transformations that will enhance the drive towards environmental sustainability, climate action, nature protection and pollution prevention. Early analyses suggest the benefits from digital technologies for environmental sustainability are significant:

Climate action and decarbonization: potentially reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 20%;

Nature action and dematerialization: potentially reduce the use of natural resources in products by 90%;

Pollution action and detoxification: potentially reduce waste and detoxify supply chains by a factor of 10-100X.

UNEP aims to harness the power of digital transformation to achieve these environmental outcomes by enabling and shaping the required information, incentives, behaviors and governance frameworks. UNEP has now adopted Digital Transformation as an enabling programme to harness these opportunities. Learn more about pilots and early success projects that address 3 planetary crises by building digital ecosystems, shifting markets and behaviors and increase digital literacy and e-governance capacity.
