Taiping Street on the List of National Blocks for Leisure Tourism

星辰在线 | 01 16, 2022

On January 10, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China released the list of National Blocks for Leisure Tourism, and Taiping Street made it on the list as the only street in Changsha. Adjacent to the Xiang River, this fishbone-shaped street is located in downtown Changsha, offering both a historical charm and commercial excitement.

Since the Warring States period (475 or 403-221BC), Taiping Street has been the center of Changsha, making it home to a number of cultural relics and historical sites. Among them, there are the former residence of Jia Yi (a high minister and famous writer in the Han Dynasty), the site of the mansion of Prince Ji of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and the site of the Progressive Society, founded during 1911 Revolution. In November 2007, after 4 years of restoration and renovation, Taiping Street reopened with the traditional architectural style of Changsha in the late Qing Dynasty (1636-1912), featuring grey tiles, slope roofs, and wooden windows and doors.

Currently, Taiping Street is home to more than 200 stores, mainly in traditional industries such as tourism products, art collections, ethnic crafts, and cultural and art industries. It is home to some famous cultural tourism enterprises, including Tianxin Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection and Exhibition Centre, Taiping King (a cultural and creative community), Advance Art Museum, and Wenheyou Stinky Tofu Museum. The street has also cultivated a number of emerging trendy enterprises and stores such as Wenheyou, Sexy Tea, Chengyuan Ancient Pub, and Peach Garden Gift. According to a local official, cultural companies account for about 62% of the entire business in Taiping Street. With diversified business formats, including food, entertainment, shopping, hospitality, leisure, etc., Taiping Street will definitely offer visitors a memorable trip.

Taiping Street presents a harmonious coexistence of modern civilization and traditional culture. It always embraces visitors home and abroad with the unique Hunan culture and profound history of a “City of Media Arts”.
