Connecting the world with sounds in Hamamatsu

长沙市媒体艺术发展中心 | 03 31, 2022

Recognizing the importance of music in fostering cross-cultural understanding and cultural diversity, the Creative City of Hamamatsu, Japan, launched in November 2021 its “Global Sequencer”, an innovative online tool that allows individuals, generations, continents, countries, and cities to connect with sounds.

The project, developed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic as a response to global travel restrictions, aims to bring the world's population together through sound. Created by sound designer Yuri Suzuki, as part of the city’s commitment to broaden and push the boundaries of sound design, the Sequencer is intended to create a sense of global connection.

In line with the city’s commitment to promoting access to culture and creativity, Hamamatsu’s Sequencer was developed with a participatory approach. In fact, anyone with an internet connection can access the two main functions offered by the Sequencer: “Playback mode” and “Sequencer mode”. Using the “Playback mode” an individual can share a sound that will be associated with a geographical position on an interactive map, while the “Sequencer mode” allows for the creation of new sounds based on those previously shared.

The city of Hamamatsu encourages cities around the world, as well as individuals, to participate in the project, working together to expand the boundaries of sound design while uniting sound lovers around the world.
